Australian hockey player Matt Dawson, who broke his finger during training, had the top part of his right ring finger cut off in order to be able to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, taking into account the healing process. Dawson, who said "This could be my last Olympics", stated, "If the price I have to pay is to lose the top part of my finger, then this is what I had to do."

The 33rd edition of the Olympic Games, the world's largest sports event, will start today. Australian field hockey player Matt Dawson made an incredible move by cutting off a part of his ring finger to be able to compete in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

RECOVERY WILL TAKE MONTHS

Two weeks ago, Matt Dawson broke his right ring finger during a team training session in Perth. Dawson said he fainted when he saw his finger in the locker room and immediately sought the help of a plastic surgeon, thinking that his Olympic dreams were over. The surgeon told the athlete that even with surgery to repair his finger, he might not fully regain its function.

HE CUT OFF HIS FINGER FOR THE OLYMPICS

Following this development, the 30-year-old athlete decided to cut off a certain part of his finger to be able to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Despite being warned by his wife not to do something impulsive, Dawson stated that he made this decision consciously on the same afternoon.

"THIS COULD BE MY LAST OLYMPICS"

In an interview, Matt Dawson described his experience, saying, "I am definitely closer to the end of my career than the beginning, and who knows, this could be my last Olympics. If I still feel that I can perform at my best, then this is what I had to do. If the price I have to pay is to lose the top part of my finger, then this is what I had to do."

GREAT SUPPORT FROM TEAMMATES

Team captain Aran Zalewski stated in a press conference in Paris that Dawson's decision shocked the team. He said, "We really didn't know what to think, and then we heard that he went to the hospital and cut off his finger, which was quite interesting because I know that sometimes people can give an arm, a leg, or even a finger to be here. When you make choices and sacrifices throughout your life to come and compete at the highest level, I think it was an easy decision for him."
