India: Malegaon Father Urge Court To Bar Candidacy

Blast victim’s father says candidate not well enough to be in jail but healthy enough to campaign during summer hear.

An application has been filed urging the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Court on Thursday to bar a suspect in a deadly bombing from running in the lower house of parliament election.

Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Bhopal, Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, declared her candidacy in Madhya Pradesh in central India.

Pragya Thakur is one of the main suspects in the Malegaon blast where two bombs fitted on a motorcycle exploded killing six people and injured more than 100 in September 2008.

Pragya Thakur is out on bail.

Nisar Sayeed, who lost his son in the blast, argued Pragya was released on bail on the pretext that she is unwell and "a patient of breast cancer," according to a report on New Delhi Television (NDTV).

Nisar Sayeed said, "that [the] intervener would further submit that Sadhvi Pragya Thakur got bail on health grounds but clearly healthy enough to fight elections in the crippling summer heat which means she has misguided the court."

The NIA is expected to file its reply April 23, when the petition is likely to be heard.

Polling in Bhopal will be held o May 12.

The counting of votes will take place May 23. -
