Claims that counterfeit $50 and $100 banknotes printed abroad have been circulated, leading some currency exchange offices in the Grand Bazaar to stop buying dollars, have caused public outrage. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation ex officio regarding the claim that counterfeit dollars printed abroad have been circulated. Following this development, consecutive statements came from the Central Bank and the Banks Association of Turkey. In a statement made by the Central Bank, it was noted that the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) is conducting necessary work in coordination with the relevant judicial authorities as part of its effective fight against banknote counterfeiting, and it was stated: "In this context, the counterfeit foreign banknotes that have been the subject of news regarding the increase in circulation in the market recently have been sent to our Bank by the judicial authorities for the purpose of preparing an expert report." "THERE ARE FAKE EUROS TOO"Financial Analyst İslam Memiş, in a television broadcast he participated in, warned that there are not only counterfeit dollars in the market but also counterfeit Euros, making the following statement: Today, another news has come. Especially with the operation carried out by the police, counterfeit euros have also entered the market. What does this mean? It means that our citizens need to be vigilant not only against these $50 and $100 but also against counterfeit euros. For years, especially during summer holidays and festivals, these counterfeit bills are frequently circulated in the market. Occasionally, operations are carried out. But now there is modern technology. There is artificial intelligence technology. Counterfeiters operate like the Central Bank. They use that much technology. And for them, melting these separately and circulating them is very easy. The important thing here is that our citizens need to be very careful. They should not engage in currency exchange with people they do not know. "MAKE SURE TO REPORT"Some unscrupulous, opportunistic traders. We buy, but we buy $5 less. I want to call out to our citizens from here. If someone asks you for a $5 commission for a $100 exchange, definitely report them to the Ministry of Treasury and Finance and have their authorization certificate revoked. This is also opportunism. There is a problem here. As a country, as public institutions and organizations, we should solve this problem together, while some opportunists taking a $500 commission from $100 is disgusting. We must not give in to them. Public institutions and organizations will solve this very soon. They should be patient for two weeks. After the software for the money counting machines in all banks and currency exchange offices is updated, this problem will completely disappear. HOW TO DETECT FAKE DOLLARS?Counterfeit currencies can be recognized especially by their sounds. The sound produced when shaken is very different in counterfeits. Counterfeit currencies also have regional characteristics. There are those coming from Asia, and those coming from the Middle East. They have their own characteristics. For example, they should also be held in the shadow. In the old $100 bills, you can see Franklin's shadow here. Both eyes must be open. If one eye is closed, it is counterfeit. There is a very distinct feature there. However, in the recently circulated counterfeit currencies, both eyes are open. They need to pay attention to that as well.
