Since October 7, 2023, Israel has released 20 Palestinians it had detained during its genocide operations in the Gaza Strip. One of the Palestinian prisoners who regained his freedom described the difficult conditions, saying, "The conditions were very bad. There are sick people, and there are people with amputated limbs."

Hamas had previously stated that it conditioned a permanent ceasefire and the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the areas it occupied in Gaza for a prisoner exchange. The Director of Mossad participated in the talks held in Doha on October 27-28 to resume negotiations for the prisoner exchange. It is reported that Hamas holds 101 Israeli prisoners.
