Israel 'Satisfied' As US Announces No 'Definitive Conclusion' On Killing Of Abu Akleh

Israel is 'satisfied' as the US announced no "definitive conclusion" on the origin of the bullet that killed Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, according to Israeli media.

While Israel is 'satisfied' by the findings, the Palestinian side rejected the results of forensic analysis by US experts, reported daily Yediot Ahronot on Monday.

The US on Monday concluded its examination on the bullet that killed Abu Akleh, and its State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement the gunfire from the Israeli position was "likely responsible" for her death.

"After an extremely detailed forensic analysis, independent, third-party examiners, as part of a process overseen by the US Security Coordinator (USSC), could not reach a definitive conclusion regarding the origin of the bullet that killed Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh," it said.

In response to the US findings, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said: "The IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) investigation was unable to determine who is responsible for the tragic death of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, but it was able to determine conclusively that there was no intention to harm her." He also expressed sorrow over her death.

Moreover, Israel's Defense Minister Benny Gantz said: "Despite the forensic investigation, it was not possible to reach a definitive conclusion."

In his speech aired on TV and posted on Twitter, Gantz held "the terrorists who operate from within population centers" responsible for killing Abu Akleh.

He stressed it was impossible to "determine the source of the shooting and as such the investigation will continue."

Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation, on the other hand, said a US expert conducted an investigation on the gun and the bullet that killed Abu Akleh in a laboratory of the Israeli police in Jerusalem.

Abu Akleh, 51, was shot dead on May 11 while covering an Israeli military raid near the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.

While Palestinian officials and her employer Al Jazeera accused Israel of killing the reporter, Tel Aviv denied any responsibility. -
