Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi made statements regarding the Israeli attacks on Syria following the end of the Assad regime.
"WE HAVE NO INTENTION TO GOVERN SYRIA"
Visiting the troops stationed in the occupied Golan Heights, Halevi claimed in his speech that they did not intervene in the developments in Syria, stating, "We have no intention to govern Syria."
"THERE WAS AN ENEMY COUNTRY AND ITS ARMY COLLAPSED"
Claiming that they took "professional and correct" steps in Syria for the safety of Israeli citizens, Halevi stated, "There was an enemy country here and its army collapsed. We advanced to prevent the risk of terrorist elements coming here. Radical terrorist elements will not be able to settle in areas close to the border thanks to us."
ISRAEL'S ATTACKS ON SYRIA
Following the intensification of clashes in Syria on November 27, coinciding with the collapse of the 61-year-old Baath regime on December 8, the Israeli army increased its attacks on Syria. The Israeli army, which began to destroy the military infrastructure and capabilities left by the regime's army, expanded its occupation in the Golan Heights, which is Syrian territory.
The Israeli army, which entered the buffer zone around the Golan Heights, advanced its occupation further, reaching as close as 25 kilometers to the capital Damascus. Israel has been occupying the Golan Heights, which belong to Syria, since 1967. The borders of the buffer zone and the demilitarized zone were determined by the Forces Withdrawal Agreement signed between Israel and Syria in 1974.
