The harvest of the gilaburu fruit, which grows spontaneously in wetlands in Yozgat, has begun. The fruit, which especially attracts the interest of people with kidney problems, is sold at 1,000 lira per 8-kilogram container. Gilaburu can be consumed after a waiting period of 2-3 months.
In the Çandır district of Yozgat, the harvest of gilaburu fruit, which grows spontaneously in wetlands, has begun. The fruits collected by citizens are cleaned, filled into drums, and then kept in special cellars to ripen. Gilaburu, which becomes ready for consumption after about 2-3 months, is offered for sale as fruit and fruit juice.
FRUITS ARE CLEANED AND PLACED INTO DRUMS
The harvest season of gilaburu fruit, which grows in the Çandır, Çayıralan and Boğazlıyan districts of Yozgat, especially along stream banks and in wetlands, has begun. The fruits, which ripen in autumn, are collected by producers and prepared for sale.
After harvesting, the gilaburu is cleaned of foreign matter, filled into drums, and left to stand with water added. It must be left for about 2-3 months for the fruit's distinctive astringent taste to diminish and for it to become suitable for consumption. The prepared products are offered for sale both in the region and in response to demand from outside the city.
"LAST YEAR I SOLD IT FOR 900 LIRA"
Gilaburu fruit producer Bekir Turna stated that the harvest began in the first days of October and continues until the middle of the month, and said they sell the fruits to those who request them.
Turna described the preparation process and sale of gilaburu as follows:
"We sell these to those who want them. Generally, kidney patients come and buy them. We give them to those who need to pass stones, those with kidney problems, those who need to pass sand. For example, someone comes to me from Istanbul. The person's child is ill. I give it to him every year. He also drinks the juice. He tries to live that way. We wash it in this state. We put it in drums. We sell it like that. Then we add its juice. But this ripens after 2 or 3 months. After that, its juice can be squeezed and drunk comfortably. Some add sugar and drink it. Some drink it without sugar. I give its price reasonably. I sell it for 1,000 lira. One drum is 8 kilos. Last year I sold it for 900 lira. This year I am selling it for 1,000 lira. There was no water. This doesn't happen when there is no water. Also, there is the situation of getting cold in winter conditions. The harvest continues from the 1st to the 10th of the 10th month, until the 15th."
"THERE IS PLENTY OF FRUIT THIS YEAR"
Mustafa Kır, the owner of a business that purchases gilaburu fruit at the facility they established in Çandır district, stated that after cleaning and sorting the fruits obtained from producers in the region, they fill them into drums and keep them in special cellars.
Kır noted that gilaburu becomes ready for consumption after about 2-3 months and spoke as follows:
"We collect our gilaburu grown in this region from our farmers and friends in this way. After collecting, we clean and sort them like this. After separating the dirt inside, that is, the foreign substances, we fill them into drums like this. After filling them into drums, we add water. We have our own special cellar. We put them in those cellars.
After 2 or 3 months, we offer them for use ready to eat and ready for their juice to be drunk. Can this gilaburu be eaten right now? It can. But those who know eat it; as the name suggests, gilaburu is astringent. Because it has an astringent taste, many people do not like it in this season. For that reason, we offer it for sale after waiting for about 2 months. We also offer it as juice. We also offer it as fruit like this.
Those who know us mainly from outside the city call us. We send by cargo, in cargo form, to wherever they want. In this region, it grows roughly in places like Çandır, Çayıralan, Kozan, along the stream, in wetlands. Last year there was none at all. This year, thank God, there is. There is plenty of fruit this year. I hope the price will be accordingly reasonable. I recommend it to friends.
What is it good for? I should say, for diabetics, for those who have had kidney problems, it is a product that helps pass kidney stones and sand. In terms of health, in terms of vitamin C, it is a very, very beneficial product."
