Icerenkoy CarrefourSA, one of the symbols of modern retail in Turkey, has ceased its operations. The announcement hung on the door of the store, which opened in 1993 as "Turkey's first hypermarket," drew attention.

It has been revealed that İçerenköy CarrefourSA, known as Turkey's first hypermarket, has ceased its operations. It was stated that the store, which had been serving for approximately 33 years, has not been offering service to its customers since May 18, 2026.

In the information note posted at the store entrance, it was stated that product acceptance could not be made due to reasons originating from the shopping mall, and therefore service could not be provided. While technical reasons were initially mentioned, it was later stated that the issue stemmed from the shopping mall management.

IT HAD STARTED THE HYPERMARKET ERA IN TURKEY

Carrefour's journey in Turkey began on November 22, 1993, in İçerenköy, Istanbul. The store, which was shown as Turkey's first hypermarket at the time of its opening, created a significant transformation in shopping habits with its wide product variety and large-scale structure.

The complex, which grew with the addition of the mall section in 1996, operated for many years under the name Kozyatağı Carrefour Shopping Center. Established on an area of 127 acres, the facility became one of the busiest shopping centers on the Anatolian side of Istanbul.

THERE WAS A REACTION FROM CUSTOMERS

Due to the store being closed for days, some customers reacted to the situation, stating that they could not shop. It was announced that the deliveries of aid packages prepared before Eid al-Adha would be made from the CarrefourSA Acıbadem branch.

IT REMAINED IN MEMORIES AS A SYMBOL OF AN ERA

İçerenköy CarrefourSA was considered not just a store, but one of the symbols of the development of the organized retail sector in Turkey. The store, which pioneered the spread of hypermarket culture, was a shopping point for millions of people for many years.
