Kenya Floods Claim 228 Lives As Cyclone Approaches Coast

Kenya's death toll from devastating floods sweeping across the country has climbed to 228, as authorities brace for the approaching tropical Cyclone Hidaya, which threatens to exacerbate the crisis.

With heavy rainfall and strong winds expected to intensify in the coming days, the government on Sunday urged citizens to exercise extreme caution and prepare for potential evacuation efforts.

"We mourn the loss of 9 lives in the past 24 hours, including 7 adults and 2 children, bringing the total flood-related death toll to 228, across the country. The government conveys its heartfelt condolences to friends and families who have lost their loved ones," Isaac Mwaura, Kenya's government spokesperson, said.

He added: "Tragically, the ongoing flooding has resulted in the injury of 164 Kenyans while 72 persons are currently reported missing. Furthermore, approximately 212,630 persons, from 42,526 households have been displaced."

The government noted that regrettably, the tragedy extends beyond flooding, with a devastating mudslide in Mai Mahiu claiming the lives of 52 individuals, leaving dozens of others injured, and 51 persons reported missing.

Search and rescue/retrieval operations persist in the affected areas, with 151 Kenya Defense Forces personnel and 400 National Youth Service officers deployed to assist in recovery efforts.

The worst-hit counties, including Homa Bay, Kajiado, Nakuru, Mandera, and Nairobi, grapple with extensive flooding, causing significant disruptions to daily life and economic activities.

In response to the escalating risk, the government says it continues to implement a 24-hour evacuation notice issued on May 2, prioritizing the safety of citizens residing near high-risk dams and water reservoirs.

Amid the ongoing crisis, Kenya is preparing for the impending arrival of tropical cyclone Hidaya, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to coastal regions on Sunday evening, including Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Lamu.

Fishermen and other ocean users have been advised to exercise extreme caution, as small boats and crafts may become unstable in the face of fresh to strong breezes. -
