Kenya Pushes Election Date To October 26

21.09.2017 21:59

Election commission says it is fully prepared to deliver election meeting Supreme Court's standards.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission on Thursday set a new date for Kenya's violence-marred presidential election.

In a statement, the commission said presidential election will be held afresh on Oct. 26 instead of the Oct. 17.

"In order to ensure that the commission is fully prepared to deliver an election that meets the standards set out by the Supreme Court, we wish to notify the public and all stakeholders that the fresh presidential election shall now be held on Thursday, 26th Oct. 2017," commission's Chairperson Wafula Chebukati was "ed as saying in the statement.

The Supreme Court had annulled the presidential election result that saw Uhuru Kenyatta as the winner on Sept. 1, citing irregularities and illegalities in the recording and transmission of results.

Kenyatta had vowed to "fix" the Supreme Court if re-elected and said during a televised address the Supreme Court ruling nullifying his win had set back democratic ideals for which Kenyans fought over many years. -
