Kenyans Dominate Men's Race İn London Marathon

26.04.2015 15:03

Eliud Kipchoge heads top three finish while Tigist Tufa of Ethiopia takes women's crown.

Former world champion Eliud Kipchoge won the men's London Marathon on Sunday with Ethiopia's Tigist Tufa taking the women's title.

Kenyan Kipchoge finished in 2: 04: 42 ahead of compatriots Wilson Kipsang and Dennis Kimetto after a hard-fought race.

Tufa, who won the Shanghai Marathon last year, finished in 2: 23: 22, beating two-time London winner Mary Keitany of Kenya.

Britain's David Weir missed out on a record-breaking seventh London win in the men's wheelchair race, losing a sprint finish down The Mall to American Joshua George, who came in at 1: 31: 31.

Tatyana McFadden made it a U.S. wheelchair double with a course record of 1: 41: 14 in the women's race.

Around 37,800 runners took part in the 35th London Marathon, including three-time winner and world record holder Paula Radcliffe in her last competitive marathon.

Due to injury Radcliffe set off at the head of the mass race rather than among the elite runners, rubbing shoulders with thousands raising money for charity, many in fancy dress costume.

Three out of four runners take part to raise money for charity and hope to break last year's record haul of 53.2 million pounds ($80.8 million).

Celebrities such as Formula 1 driver Jenson Button will also be taking part, watched by around 750,000 spectators lining the course between Greenwich, southeast London, and Buckingham Palace. - Ankara
