Malian Defense Minister Sadio Camara killed in suicide attack

Malian Defense Minister Sadio Camara died after being injured in a suicide attack on his residence near Bamako. The attack caused the collapse of the residence and a mosque, resulting in civilian casualties. Coordinated attacks have spread across the country, and the government declared two days of national mourning. The attacks were allegedly carried out by armed groups.

The Malian Transitional Government announced that Defense Minister Sadio Camara lost his life as a result of attacks carried out by armed groups.

SUICIDE ATTACK TARGETED HIS RESIDENCE

Government Spokesperson Brigadier General Issa Ousmane Coulibaly announced that in the attacks that occurred the day before yesterday, a suicide bomber used a vehicle to target Camara's residence in the town of Kati near Bamako.

HE CLASHED WITH THE ATTACKERS AND DIED IN THE HOSPITAL

Coulibaly stated that Camara engaged in a clash with the attackers and neutralized some of them. He noted that Camara, injured in the clash, died in the hospital where he was taken.

RESIDENCE COLLAPSED, MOSQUE DESTROYED: CIVILIAN CASUALTIES

Coulibaly reported that other losses occurred as a result of the residence collapsing during the attack, and that some individuals inside a nearby mosque also lost their lives due to its destruction. He conveyed that the government and the people of Mali extend their condolences to the families of all civilian and military victims who lost their lives.

TWO DAYS OF NATIONAL MOURNING DECLARED

It was announced that due to the death of Defense Minister Camara, two days of national mourning have been declared across the country starting today.

ARMED GROUPS BEHIND THE ATTACKS

The attacks were alleged to have been carried out by armed groups called Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin and the Azawad Liberation Front.

COORDINATED ATTACKS ACROSS THE COUNTRY

As part of coordinated attacks that began in the early hours of April 25 in Mali, intense gunfire, explosions, and clashes occurred at the Kati Military Base in the capital Bamako, the military camp around Modibo Keita International Airport, and in several cities including Kidal, Gao, and Sevare.
