Italian Prime Minister Meloni announced that they have suspended the automatic renewal process of defense agreements with Israel.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced to journalists on Tuesday that her country has halted the practice of automatically renewing its defense agreement with Israel.
Highlighting the increasing tension and diplomatic crises in the region, Meloni summarized the rationale behind this sudden decision with the following words:
"Given the current situation, the government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defense agreement with Israel."
EMPHASIS ON THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ
Addressing the importance of peace negotiations, the Italian Prime Minister expressed the steps that need to be taken to resolve crises affecting global trade and her economic concerns with the following statements:
"We must continue to work to advance peace negotiations, make every effort to stabilize the situation, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which is of vital importance to us. Frankly, this applies not only to fuel but also to fertilizer, another key element for the sector we are discussing today."
SIGNED IN 2003
The defense agreement in question between Italy and Israel, covering the exchange of military equipment and technology research, was first signed in 2003 and entered into force after being ratified two years later. Since then, the agreement, which had been regularly renewed every five years, was planned to have its final extension expire in 2031. With this latest move by the Meloni government, the future of military cooperation between the two countries remains uncertain.
