MIGRANT CRISIS CONTINUES IN THE CENTRAL MEDITERRANEAN

The Central Mediterranean route, lying between Italy, Malta, Libya, and Tunisia, continues to be one of the busiest routes used by irregular migrants trying to reach Europe.

Migrants, especially those trying to reach Italy from North Africa, often set out to sea on boats carrying more people than their capacity. In addition to adverse weather and sea conditions, the inadequacy of the boats also increases the risk of death.

During crossings in the Mediterranean, many migrants also lose their lives due to causes such as thirst, lack of air, and exposure to exhaust fumes. A significant part of search and rescue activities in the region is carried out by European-based non-governmental organizations.
