An unspecified number of militants have been killed in an airstrike believed to be carried out by a U.S. drone on a car carrying suspected Al-Qaeda gunmen in the southern Yemeni province of Shabwah, a security source said.
"The late Sunday airstrike…targeted a car carrying Al-Qaeda militants while it was passing on the road between Markha and Beihan districts in Shabwah, killing all passengers," the source, who asked not to be named, told Anadolu Agency on Monday.
The raid is the latest in a string of such attacks that hit suspected Al-Qaeda targets in Yemen's southern provinces.
On Sunday, a Yemeni security official told Anadolu Agency that a drone shelled an Al-Qaeda site in Abydan's Mahfad district, leaving a yet-unknown number of casualties.
The Sunday raids came only one day after another drone attack on an Al-Qaeda hideout in the central Al-Bayda' province left ten militants and three civilians dead, according to a security source.
Following the attacks, the Yemeni parliament decided to summon the country's defense and interior ministers to answer questions on attacks launched by U.S. drones inside the country.
A majority of the 301-member parliament endorsed a request to summon the two ministers to appear before the legislature on Thursday.
US drones frequently launch attacks on suspected Al-Qaeda sites in Yemen.
The group is active in several districts of southern Yemen, from which it continues to stage sporadic attacks on army and police targets.
Yemen has been dogged by turmoil since pro-democracy protests in 2011 forced president Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down after 33 years in office.
In the three years since, authorities have struggled to restore order and security to the southern Arabian country.
