AKOM: BOTH COLD AND RAINY WEATHER WILL PREVAIL

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) issued a new and critical warning for Istanbul.

In the statement made by the IMM, it was noted that a large part of Turkey, especially Istanbul, had come under the influence of a cold air wave coming from the Balkans and rainy systems carried over the Central Mediterranean.

WILL INTENSIFY TOMORROW

In the statement, which noted that due to the heavy shower that started on Tuesday morning and continued without interruption in the city, rainfall of between 130 and 278 kilograms per square meter fell in districts around the Bosphorus and in the northern and central parts of the European Side, it was conveyed that the rainfall was effective at moderate intensity in the northern districts and lightly in other areas throughout the night.

5 DISTRICTS AT RISK

In the statement, which said that the rainfall expected to continue intermittently throughout the province during the day could be locally heavy in the northern districts of Arnavutköy, Eyüp, Sarıyer, Beykoz and Şile, it was reported that the rainfall was expected to intensify across the city tomorrow, especially in Beykoz, Sarıyer, Şile and Eyüp.

In the statement, it was stated that IMM teams had rescued and evacuated 622 people stranded in the city due to the rainfall, and that currently all roads in the city except Şile Teke-Darlık Road and Geredeli Street in Şile’s Geredeli Neighborhood were open to traffic.

CAUTION FROM THIS HOUR ON

In the Meteorology’s updated new map, it was seen that heavy rainfall would begin today from 18:00 and intensify from the night hours.

It was also reported that rainfall would be very heavy during the day tomorrow.

“THE RISK CONTINUES. BECAUSE THE SOIL HAS REACHED SATURATION”

Abdullah Macit, weather forecasting expert at the General Directorate of Meteorology, also made assessments regarding the expected weather across the country and said that heavy rainfall was expected in Istanbul on Saturday, and locally very heavy rainfall in the northern and eastern parts of the city.

Answering a question about whether the same amount of rainfall was expected again after the rainfall that was effective in the city yesterday, Macit used the expressions, “Although not that much in terms of amount, our risk still continues. Because the soil has reached saturation. Therefore, let us warn Istanbulites against heavy rainfall on Saturday until the night hours.”

WILL LOSE ITS EFFECT ON SUNDAY

Macit stated that the rainfall in Istanbul would lose its effect after the morning hours on Sunday.

Urging citizens to be careful against floods, flash floods and landslides, Macit advised especially in Istanbul not to go out into traffic on Saturday unless necessary.

Conveying that rainfall continued especially in the western and northeastern parts of the country, Macit reported that they expected the rainfall to continue across the country on Saturday and Sunday.

Stating that on Saturday rainfall would be heavy in eastern Marmara, inland Aegean, Mediterranean Region, western Central Anatolia and Western Black Sea, Abdullah Macit noted the following:

“On Saturday, especially around Kocaeli, Sakarya, Yalova and Bursa, rainfall will be severe in places. We ask citizens to be careful against floods and flash floods. On Sunday, we estimate that rainfall will be very heavy and severe around Düzce, Zonguldak and Bartın.”

Also touching on the rainfall expected in Ankara and Izmir, Macit said, “In Ankara, heavy rainfall begins on Friday, especially after the evening hours. On Saturday, locally heavy rainfall continues. Let us also warn Ankara residents against floods and flash floods. In Ankara, we do not expect rainfall from the beginning of the week either.”

Macit stated that rainfall was expected in Izmir only on Saturday, that the rainfall would manifest as thundery showers but would not be heavy.

STRONG STORM WARNING FOR WESTERN BLACK SEA AND WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN

Also pointing out that strong winds were expected in addition to rainfall, Abdullah Macit stated that winds reaching storm force at times from southerly directions would be effective in the Western Mediterranean, especially the northern parts of the Eastern Mediterranean, and the north and east of Central Anatolia, while from northerly directions in the Western Black Sea.

Macit used the expressions, “On this matter, let us especially warn our seafarers in the Western Black Sea and Western Mediterranean; we expect a strong storm, and they need to be careful in this regard.”

Also making a statement regarding air temperature, Macit provided the information, “In the first days of next week, we expect temperatures below seasonal norms, especially in the western parts. In the eastern parts, it will also hover around seasonal norms.”
