Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya responded to the criticisms and questions of the deputies during the budget discussions of his ministry at the TBMM Planning and Budget Commission. Yerlikaya answered questions regarding femicides as follows; "KADES, an excellent application, started on March 18, 2018, during the term of Minister Süleyman. The closest person to the incident leaves his job and goes there. There is such an instruction. KADES received an award at the 15th General Assembly of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly in Paris. According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the average rate of femicides per 100,000 women was 1.1 in 2021 and increased to 1.2 in 2022. Unfortunately, there is an upward trend in the world, as stated by the UN. We say zero tolerance regarding violence against women. There were 284 femicides in 2022, 309 in 2023, and 276 femicides in the first 10 months of 2024.
"WE HAVE WOMEN SIGN A DOCUMENT FOR THE PROTECTION ORDER"
There is no capacity issue regarding electronic bracelets. We can quickly increase the capacity from 1,500 to 5,000; we have no problem in this regard. We have women sign a document for the protection order we have obtained. After obtaining the protection order, the police read the 11 items in the document. They say, 'We have taken you under protection, but you must comply with this.' For example, they say, 'If the suspect approaches you, go to the nearest safe place and directly ask for help from the police. Do not meet the suspect face to face.' Because it is proven by experience. We read all of these to them. Once a week, we ask the muhtar, 'Is there anyone coming and going here?' Intelligence is now monitoring that. I am saying for the first time that despite having a protection order, last year 32 women opened the door when a man came, without following our warning, and he attacked them inside."
RESPONSE FROM CHP AND DEM PARTY DEPUTIES WAS IMMEDIATE
CHP and DEM Party deputies reacted to Minister Yerlikaya's statements by saying, "How easy it is to blame women." Yerlikaya responded to the deputies, "Whose side are you on? We are protecting women." Regarding the "Turkey is One Heart" campaign launched after the earthquakes on February 6, 2023, Minister Yerlikaya answered a question by saying, "You asked the question of 'where is the interest of the money going' that our esteemed nation has asked by trusting AFAD. The interest of 16 billion 107 million 806 thousand 723 liras is deposited into the accounts of three public banks. This interest remains in the same account as it is. All of these are audited by the Court of Accounts."
