Former Ülkü Ocakları General President Sinan Ateş was killed in a gun attack on December 30, 2022, in the Çukurambar neighborhood of Çankaya district in Ankara. The trial of a total of 22 defendants, 12 of whom are in custody, regarding the murder of Ateş continued at the Ankara 32nd Heavy Penal Court at the Sincan Prison Campus. Minutes before the announcement of the verdict, a person attacked Sinan Ateş's family in the courthouse garden. It was learned that after the attack on sister Selma Ateş, mother Saniye Ateş was taken to the hospital, and the moments were captured on camera second by second.

Before the final statements of the defendants were taken in the trial of the assassination of Sinan Ateş at the Ankara 32nd Heavy Penal Court, the last words of the defendants were asked. One of the detained defendants, Shooter Eray Özyağcı, stated, "I think I have given my statement sincerely. I did not intentionally kill anyone. I came to injure. I shot Sinan Ateş in the legs, and he fell face down. Then, when my friends came, I panicked and continued to shoot. It happened spontaneously. I wish it hadn't happened. I responded because I thought Selman would shoot me. My gun position is already clear. I deserve any punishment deemed appropriate for me. But I do not want to be punished for perception operations. I wish he hadn't died; I didn't want him to die. He died, and a lot of trouble came upon us. We found ourselves here," he expressed.

Vedat Balkaya, who helped the shooter escape from the scene on a motorcycle: "First of all, I have been trying to sincerely convey the incident to you since the first hearing. My purpose for coming to Ankara was just a matter of debt. If I had known that a person would die, I wouldn't have come to Ankara. I came for a debt issue, and a very different incident occurred. I inadvertently helped with the incident. I request my acquittal, as the punishment you impose is lighter than my neck."

Detained defendant Suat Kurt, who conducted reconnaissance before the incident: "I trust my state and my justice. I want to be punished for my involvement in the incident; I request my release."

"I ask you to clean this dirty table with a clean cloth."

Detained defendant instigator Doğukan Çep: "I have told what I need to tell. I did not receive orders from anyone; the incident is my personal matter."

Detained defendant Tolgahan Demirbaş, former General Center Manager of Ülkü Ocakları: "After the incident, they targeted a community that had no relation to the event. I am a nationalist who has no connection to the incident. I ask you to clean this dirty table with a clean cloth. I want you to make your decision based on concrete evidence. I believe you will give a fair decision. As a nationalist, I trust Turkish justice and courts. I request my release."

Detained defendant special insult police Aşkın Mert Gelenbey: "I did not help anyone to come to Ankara and shoot someone. I have no connection to the incident. I request my release."

"Please provide us with the justice we deserve."

Detained defendant MHP lawyer Serdar Öktem: "Due to the emphasis on justice by the President in the judge and prosecutor exam, the sword of democracy hanging over us, and the fact that some are using this case for political gain or to reach certain positions in the judiciary, I request that you truly provide justice. While requests for extended investigations to establish the material truth are rejected, I cannot define my victimization here. Please provide us with the justice we deserve. I truly expect you to provide justice."

Detained defendant Emre Yüksel, Deputy General President of Ülkü Ocakları: "There is no evidence against me; I am detained on a hypothetical basis. I request my release and acquittal."

Detained defendant Mustafa Ensar Aykal, former Chief of the Homicide Bureau of the Ankara Police Department: "I repeat my previous statements. I wish mercy from Allah for the deceased. I request my release and acquittal."

"I am not the killer of Sinan Ateş."

Undetained defendant Zekeriya Asarkaya: "They want to portray me as if I am involved in this incident. I had the motorcycle pulled in front of my house, in front of the cameras, so that no harm would come. After this incident, I have made enemies. Yesterday, while going up the stairs, a friend from the other side said, 'We are coming to your house.' I lost my sleep. Today, I saw one of those who said that. He insulted me and tried to hit me. A report was filed, but I am not a complainant. I will be a tradesman. I am in a very victimized situation. I am not the killer of Sinan Ateş. I want this perception to be cleared. If there is any evidence to the contrary, I am ready to accept any punishment you will give. I request my acquittal."

Other defendants also requested their release and acquittal. The court president adjourned the hearing until 16:30 to deliberate and announce the decision.
