C.Ç., who was found to have hidden her pregnancy from her family for 9 months, claimed that she thought her newborn baby was dead and threw it in the trash. In the incident, where the baby who narrowly escaped death was placed in foster care, the court sentenced the young woman to 12 years in prison.

The incident occurred on November 2, 2023, on Karadut Street in the Kuzeykent neighborhood of Kastamonu. A baby boy, found by citizens wrapped in a plastic bag near a trash container, was taken to the hospital after medical intervention. It was reported that the newborn held onto life after an intensive care process.

Within the scope of the investigation conducted by the Kastamonu Provincial Police Department, it was determined that the mother of the baby was C.Ç. It was learned that the young woman hid her pregnancy from her family and gave birth in the toilet at home.

According to the allegations, C.Ç. believed the baby had died after birth, placed it in a trash bag, and had her father, who was stated to be mentally unstable, throw it in the trash.

It was learned that the baby, whose treatment process was completed, was later taken into care by a foster family in Ankara.

Speaking at the hearing, the baby's guardian S.K. said, "I am very happy to have taken the guardianship of the baby." The baby's father, K.G., stated that he did not file a complaint against the defendant.

The detained defendant C.Ç., in her defense in court, expressed regret and requested her release.

The young woman stated, "I am very sorry. I cannot get news of my child during the time I have been detained. I want to be tried without detention for my child."

SENTENCE REDUCED FROM LIFE TO 12 YEARS

The court panel sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment for the crime of "qualified intentional killing of a person from her descendant who cannot defend herself physically or mentally."

However, because the crime remained at the attempt stage and the defendant was under the age of 18 at the time of the incident, the sentence was reduced to 12 years.
