Movement at the NATO border! Russia has begun massing tanks.

It has emerged that Russia has dispatched tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery systems to its military depots in regions near NATO borders. Satellite imagery showed that new and modernized military vehicles are being accumulated at facilities near Finland and the Baltic countries. While Russia's reinforcement of its military stocks draws attention, experts note that this mobility does not mean direct preparation for an attack on NATO.

It was reported that Russia has carried out new shipments to reinforce its military equipment depots. In particular, it was stated that armored vehicles and heavy weapons systems were sent to military storage facilities at points close to the borders of NATO countries.

It was conveyed that the shipments do not consist only of newly produced military vehicles; equipment that has undergone maintenance and repair and been made ready for reuse was also moved to the depots.

TANKS, ARMORED VEHICLES AND ARTILLERY SYSTEMS

According to information conveyed regarding military activity in the region, the shipments include tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers and artillery systems.

The placement of these equipment in military depots is assessed within the scope of Russia's efforts to strengthen its military capacity in border regions.

185 KILOMETERS FROM THE FINNISH BORDER

In examinations based on satellite imagery, it was determined that new artillery systems were brought to the 374th military storage facility in the Karelia region, approximately 185 kilometers from the Finnish border. It was stated that since 2025, Malva and Giatsint-K type self-propelled howitzers have been accumulated at the facility.

At the 22nd Central Tank Reserve Base in the town of Buy in the Kostroma region, approximately 500 kilometers from the borders of Estonia and Latvia, it was recorded that the number of T-90M tanks, BTR-82A armored personnel carriers and BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles increased.

SATELLITE IMAGERY REVEALED MILITARY ACTIVITY

The change in Russia's military depots was revealed by independent researchers comparing satellite imagery from 2025 and 2026.

In the examinations, it was determined that some military depots that had been largely emptied during the Ukraine war were refilled.

It was reported that approximately 78 T-72B3 tanks and more than 100 BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles were also brought to the Topchikha base in Russia's Altai region.

PREPARATION FOR AN ATTACK ON NATO?

Military experts assess that Russia's rebuilding of its armored vehicle stockpiles while the war in Ukraine continues may point to long-term military planning. However, according to experts, the presence of these vehicles in depots does not mean that preparations are being made for a direct attack on NATO. It is stated that a significant portion of the vehicles have not been sent to active units and are being stored for the purpose of replenishing military reserves.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) also assesses that the risk of Russia launching a near-term conventional ground attack against Finland and the Baltic countries remains very low.
