At least 75 people have died over the past four weeks from a hemorrhagic fever "of unknown origin" in northwestern Democratic Republic of Congo, a U.N. radio station reported Friday, "ing local officials.

According to Kinshasa-based Okapi Radio, the deaths were reported in various areas of Equateur Province, including Boende, a town located some 300km east of provincial capital Mbandaka.

The reports came one day after Health Minister Felix Kabange Numbi had put the death toll at only 13.

"The 13 fatalities had developed fever and diarrhea, vomiting blackish material," Numbi had told reporters.

The mystery disease comes amid an outbreak of the Ebola virus, which, according to the World Health Organization, has killed at least 1350 people in West Africa since February.
