In the ongoing methane gas fire in the Kartepe district of Kocaeli, teams continue to wait in the area, and on the 10th day, it was observed that the flames have decreased compared to the first day.
On February 17, a fire broke out during drilling work conducted as part of the metro project in the area where Bedir Street intersects with Ulus Avenue in the Dumlupınar neighborhood of Kartepe district, when they reached a depth of 47 meters. Upon notification, fire brigade, health services, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the natural gas distribution company, and police teams were dispatched to the scene. Teams that blocked access to the area surrounding the fire took security measures in the region. During the explosion that occurred at that time, a worker who was slightly injured on his face was discharged after treatment at the hospital he was taken to.
EXTINGUISHED CONTROLLED AND REIGNITED
Due to the fire, the natural gas distribution company teams temporarily halted the gas flow to homes. Seeing that the fire was still ongoing, the teams reported the situation to the authorities. A day after the fire, expert teams from the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), which arrived in the area, took samples from the fire that was extinguished in a controlled manner by the fire brigade. After the sample was taken, the fire was reignited in a controlled manner.
PARTIALLY DECREASED
Examinations on the samples revealed that the burning gas was methane. It was observed that the flames had partially decreased in the fire that had been ongoing for 10 days. The teams continue to wait in the area.
