Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that they will file a lawsuit against the New York Times (NYT) in response to the newspaper's investigative report containing allegations of torture and sexual violence against Palestinian prisoners.
Netanyahu stated on his social media account, referring to the article authored by NYT columnist Nicholas Kristof, that he instructed his legal advisors "to consider initiating the most severe legal proceedings against The New York Times and Nicholas Kristof."
ISRAELI GOVERNMENT ORDERS COMPENSATION LAWSUIT
The Israeli Prime Minister's Office also announced that Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar have ordered the filing of a compensation lawsuit against the NYT.
STRIKING ALLEGATIONS IN NYT INVESTIGATION
In the investigation published by the NYT on May 12, it was alleged that rape, sexual assault, strip searches, torture of genitals, and threats of sexual violence are widely practiced against Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention centers. As part of the investigation, 14 Palestinian men and women detained or assaulted by Israel were interviewed.
Some Palestinians quoted in the article described being subjected to sexual assault with batons, being stripped naked, having their genitals tortured, and being threatened while in custody.
GUARDIAN REPORT ALSO INCLUDED SIMILAR ALLEGATIONS
Meanwhile, a report previously published by The Guardian noted that at least 16 cases of sexual violence against Palestinians had been recorded in the West Bank over the past three years.
