New era in physical: Counterfeiting will be prevented with QR code

A new application has been launched to protect citizens investing in physical gold from counterfeit products. With the Precious Metal Tracking System introduced by the Turkish Mint, it is planned to register gram, quarter, and Republic gold coins with a security code during the production stage. Consumers will be able to verify the authenticity of the product they intend to purchase by scanning a QR code with their mobile phones.

The rising interest in physical gold has brought the risk of counterfeiting in the market back to the agenda. A new tracking and verification mechanism has been established to ensure citizens can access reliable products, especially in gram and quarter gold coins preferred for investment purposes.

GOLD WILL BE TRACKED FROM THE MOMENT IT IS PRODUCED

The Precious Metals Tracking System (KMTS), implemented by the Mint, is based on registering gold before it enters the market. It aims to identify the source of gold by defining product-specific security information during production. With this method, the goal is to monitor the process from the production stage to the point of sale more effectively.

SECURITY MARK BELONGING TO THE MINT WILL BE USED

Within the scope of the system, a special security label and code created by the Mint will be applied to the products. Thus, unlike the codes created only by the refinery, a verification mechanism registered by the state will be activated. Experts point out that consumers, especially those purchasing packaged gold, should not evaluate the product only by looking at its packaging.

QR CODE CAN BE SCANNED WITH A PHONE

One of the most important conveniences this new application provides to consumers will be the ability to perform the verification process via phone. By scanning the QR code on the product through the Ministry of Treasury and Finance's application, it will be possible to check whether the gold is registered in the system. This will enable citizens to make faster decisions about the reliability of the product during shopping.

COUNTERFEIT GOLD OPERATIONS INCREASED

Counterfeiting cases in the market were also a significant factor in the implementation of the new application. Legal proceedings had been initiated against individuals identified as producing and selling counterfeit gold in operations carried out in Istanbul. With the Mint's new tracking system, the aim is to make it harder for counterfeit products to enter the market, accelerate detection processes, and enable citizens buying physical gold to shop more safely.
