Honest, Abe spared death; banished to 'Turkey Hill,'

President Barack Obama followed a traditional Wednesday and spared two turkeys from being Thanksgiving dinner during a White House ceremony. 



Obama pardoned Honest and its alternate Abe, 18-week old, 40-pound turkeys whose names of were chosen from submissions from California school children, according to the White House.



The turkeys were selected in an online vote. 



"I can announce that the American people have spoken, and we have two winners. Their names are Honest and Abe. I confess that Honest looks like good eating, but this is a Democracy," Obama said, as the audience burst into laughter. 



First daughters Sasha and Malia accompanied him during the ceremony.



The turkeys raised in the Central Valley of California under the supervision of the National Turkey Federation will be on display for visitors at their permanent home, the Morven Park's "Turkey Hill," a historic turkey farm in Leesburg, Virginia. 



The Turkey pardoning ceremony dates to 1989 when President George H.W. Bush began the tradition that has been upheld by every president since that time.



The first documented pardon was by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 but the story of originated in the 19th century with President Abraham Lincoln whose son begged him to spare his pet turkey. - Washington DC
