Over 8,500 Bangladeshis Languishing In Jails Abroad

India is keeping highest numbers of Bangladeshi nationals in detention centers, jails, says foreign minister.

India is keeping the highest numbers of Bangladeshi nationals in its detention centers, Bangladeshi foreign minister said on Thursday.
According to AK Abdul Momen, the foreign minister, a total of 8,848 Bangladeshi nationals have been languishing in prisons or detention centers in 44 countries, while India alone detained 2,049 Bangladeshis.
Momen disclosed the information at a question-answer session in the parliament.
The Bangladeshi nationals have been detained due to several reasons -- including lack of valid travel documents.
The minister, however, informed the parliament the country's Foreign Ministry is working through its embassies in different countries for the return of the detainees following legal proceedings.
The efforts included appointing lawyers to respective countries, providing travel documents and other necessary papers, he said, adding some Bangladeshis have recently been repatriated from Indonesia, Tunisia and Libya.
A total of 1,156 Bangladeshi nationals are in jails of UAE, 768 in Saudi Arabia, 693 in Bahrain, 572 in Malaysia, 442 in Oman, 316 in Kuwait and 327 in Turkey, Momen said. -
