A number of İzmir State Opera and Ballet performers were involved in a car crash late on Sunday while returning from the 21st International Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival in Antalya, media outlets have reported.
The accident occurred at 12 a.m. near Adnan Menderes Airport. The car, driven by Cihan Genek, struck a service bus operated by Süleyman Şaban, who had run a red light. Performers Cihan Genek and spouse Elif İpek Genek, as well as Bora Acar Zöngür, Nejat Beğde and Cihan Özmen were injured when the car spun out of control. A number of ambulances were sent to the scene, and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Zöngür and Özmen had cuts to the neck and were taken to a hospital in critical condition. Özmen, while being carried on a stretcher, reportedly said: “I can't feel my feet. I don't want to be handicapped. Please help.”
Others were also killed and injured in traffic accidents across Turkey over the weekend.
The number of casualties increased to four as another two died in the hospital after a car accident in Bursa yesterday, when a bus driver lost control and went over a cliff while returning the vehicle from a company's staff picnic.
One died and five were injured in a road accident in Manavgat when a car collided with a minibus on the Antalya-Mersin D-400 road.
Another traffic accident in Bursa claimed the life of a driver when he came off the road after losing control of his vehicle. Thirty-year-old Engin Karagöz was rushed to the hospital by ambulance but died en route.
Four children and eight adults were injured in another accident in Nusaybin, Mardin province. The accident occurred near the village of Demirtepe, in the Nusaybin-Cizre area, when a bus crashed into a truck that was overtaking unsafely.(Cihan/Today's Zaman)
