It was reported that the terrorist organization PKK evacuated 10 military points at the foothills of Mount Karaçok, described as the organization's "fortress," in Iraq's Mahmur region. While the Iraqi army settled in 5 of these points and Peshmerga forces in the other 5, it was stated that no armed elements affiliated with the PKK remained in the area.
Within the framework of the Terror-free Türkiye process, the terrorist organization PKK has evacuated one more camp.
According to two sources speaking to Rûdaw, the organization evacuated its camps located on the slopes of Karaçok Mountain near Mahmur Camp. It was reported that control in the areas from which the organization withdrew passed to the Iraqi army and Peshmerga forces.
10 POINTS HANDED OVER TO THE IRAQI ARMY AND PESHMERGA
A military source speaking to Rûdaw said that after the PKK withdrew from the slopes of Karaçok Mountain, an agreement was made between the Iraqi army and Peshmerga forces regarding control of the area.
The source described the details of the agreement as follows:
“A small part of the slopes of Karaçok Mountain was under PKK control. However, after this area was completely evacuated, an agreement was made between the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga. Accordingly, 5 of the 10 military points in the area were left to the Iraqi army and the other 5 to the Peshmerga Forces. At present, both forces have settled in the PKK’s former points.”
BARBED WIRE WAS PLACED AROUND MAHMUR CAMP
The same source stated that Mahmur Camp was surrounded by the Iraqi federal police and that barbed wire was placed around the camp.
Stating that there are two federal police checkpoints at the entrance to the camp, the source said that within the scope of security measures, entry and exit and movement within the camp have been significantly restricted.
The source further claimed that no armed force affiliated with the PKK remained in the area and that visits to the organization’s former military points were not permitted.
“NO PKK MEMBERS REMAIN AROUND KARAÇOK MOUNTAIN”
The second source, reported to be close to the PKK, also stated that the process of evacuating the organization’s military points began approximately two years ago.
Saying that the positions in the area, including tunnels, were evacuated, the source used the following expressions: “No PKK members remain around Karaçok Mountain. The camp is protected by Iraqi forces. Only Internal Security Forces are present inside the camp. No armed element remains.”
THE IMPORTANCE OF KARAÇOK MOUNTAIN FOR THE ORGANIZATION
Karaçok Mountain is known as one of the strategic points used by the terrorist organization PKK for planning its activities in Syria and for enabling the passage of militants and weapons along the Syria-Iraq line.
Karaçok Mountain, located in northeastern Syria near the Qamishli district of Hasakah province and close to the Iraqi border, is shown as one of the meeting points for senior organization members coming from the Kandil region and names responsible for activities in Syria. It is stated that decisions regarding some of the organization’s operations in Syria were also taken at meetings held here.
