A suspect was arrested in Poland for allegedly offering his cooperation to Russian intelligence in a plan to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, officials said Thursday.

The National Prosecutor's Office announced that a Polish national, identified as Pawel K., was arrested following an operation by Polish and Ukrainian prosecutors, along with security services, state-run PAP news agency reported.

Poland's Prosecutor General spokeswoman Anna Adamiak said the suspect was charged with "reporting readiness to act for foreign intelligence against the Republic of Poland, qualified under Article 130(3) of the Penal Code."

The crime is punishable by up to eight years in prison, she said.

The investigation found that the suspect had offered his help to Russia's military intelligence in a possible assassination attempt on Zelenskyy and established contacts with citizens of the Russian Federation directly involved in the war in Ukraine, according to PAP.

"His tasks included collecting and providing the military intelligence of the Russian Federation with information on the security of the Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport," added Adamiak. -
