While efforts to normalize relations with Syria remain on the agenda in Turkey, Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad's chief advisor Buseyna Shaaban made striking statements regarding Turkey. ERDOĞAN SAID "WE ARE READY"Before heading to the United States to attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a press conference at Atatürk Airport, stating, "Millions of people are waiting to return to their homeland outside of Syria. We have made our call on this matter. We have also expressed our willingness to meet with Bashar al-Assad for the normalization of relations between Turkey and Syria. We are now waiting for a response from the other side. We are ready for this. As two Muslim countries, we want to realize this unity as soon as possible. I believe that such a meeting will mark the beginning of a new era in the relations between the two countries." A RESPONSE CAME FROM THE SYRIAN SIDEFollowing Erdoğan's statement, a noteworthy evaluation came from the Syrian side, which had drawn attention. Buseyna Shaaban, who visited Oman, addressed regional developments in her speech and also touched upon relations with Turkey. THEY DO NOT WANT TO SIT AT THE TABLEShaaban stated that they would not sit at the table with the Turkish side due to Turkey's refusal to discuss the withdrawal of its troops from Syria, claiming that Turkey is using the rapprochement with Damascus for its own interests, and asserted, "Turkey is occupying part of our territory and is implementing a dangerous Turkification policy."
