The Ministry of Trade has started strict inspections to ensure the safety of products obtained from e-commerce platforms abroad. Laboratory tests have revealed high levels of carcinogenic and toxic substances in some products.

Recently, news about products purchased from foreign e-commerce companies threatening consumer health and safety has started to gain significant attention in national and international media.

CANCER-CAUSING SUBSTANCES DETECTED

Recently, laboratory tests conducted by the European Union (EU), Korea, and Scandinavian countries revealed that some products sold on e-commerce platforms pose serious safety risks. It was also found that a large portion of samples taken from different product groups did not meet product safety requirements. The detection of high levels of carcinogenic and toxic substances in many products, especially in the categories of clothing, footwear, leather, and children’s items, has caused concern among consumers in Turkey.

E-commerce sites, marketplaces, and stores in Turkey are subject to strict inspections to ensure compliance with standards. However, some products imported from foreign shopping sites can access the Turkish market despite carrying risks.

MINISTRY TAKES ACTION

The increase in shopping from foreign e-commerce platforms and concerns about the safety of these products prompted the Ministry of Trade to take action. The Ministry has closely monitored the analysis and evaluation processes in collaboration with other organizations responsible for product safety. Initially, the Ministry has launched a series of inspections for laboratory safety tests on footwear, textiles, and leather products, which are evaluated as high-risk categories, especially toys and baby products. In this process, additional measures will be taken based on the results of these tests and inspections, similar to the practices in the EU. Other test and certification results will be requested for these products, taking into account the risk situation. All products offered in the Turkish market must not pose safety risks, must be manufactured in a way that does not threaten public health, and must comply with technical regulations and standards.
