The capture of the capital Damascus by opposition groups in Syria ended the 61-year Baath regime. Following the opposition's entry into Damascus, Bashar al-Assad and his family sought refuge in Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke for the first time about Assad, to whom he personally granted asylum. Putin stated that he had not met with Assad since his arrival in Moscow and announced that there are plans for a meeting.

On November 27, armed opposition groups led by HTŞ began their operations and advanced to the capital, Damascus, in just 12 days. Following the entry of the opposition into Damascus, the 61-year Baath regime came to an end, and Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia with his family.

PUTIN PERSONALLY GRANTED ASYLUM

In a statement from the Kremlin, it was reported that the right of asylum for Assad and his family was personally granted by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin made evaluations on current issues during the annual press conference held in the capital, Moscow.

"I PLAN TO MEET WITH ASSAD"

For the first time since Assad's asylum in Russia, Putin stated, "I have not met with Assad since his arrival in Moscow, but I plan to." Putin also mentioned that Russia has not been defeated in Syria, saying, "We have achieved our goals in Syria; those who came to power there were not terrorists."

WHAT HAPPENED IN SYRIA?

On November 27, clashes intensified between regime-opposing armed groups and Bashar al-Assad's forces in Syria. The regime-opposing armed groups gained dominance in the largest cities such as Aleppo, Idlib, Hama, and Homs between November 30 and December 7.

As the groups began to enter the capital, Damascus, on December 7, with the support of mass crowds, the regime completely lost control in Damascus and many other regions, collapsing on December 8. The 61-year rule of the Baath Party came to an end, and regime leader Assad fled the capital.

Meanwhile, the Syrian National Army also liberated the district center of Tel Rifaat from the terrorist organization PKK/YPG on the first day of the Operation Dawn of Freedom, which was launched in December.

With the liberation of the district of Manbij during the operation, the region, which had turned into the largest terrorist stronghold west of the Euphrates River, was cleared of PKK/YPG.
