Following the incident, many people condemned the sexual assault allegation on social media, while a group gathered in front of the Bharatpur police station to protest. The woman who claimed to have been assaulted filed a complaint, and an investigation into the incident was launched.

A woman who runs a restaurant in the state capital Bhubaneswar claimed that she was harassed by a group of men on the road around 1:00 AM local time on September 15, and that she went to the Bharatpur police station with her fiancé, where she also claimed to have been subjected to physical and sexual assault by the police. Images showing the woman being kicked, dragged by her hair, and sexually assaulted at the police station were shared on social media and quickly went viral.
