In the case regarding the deaths of Kadir Muhammet Böcek, Masal Böcek, mother Çiğdem Böcek, and father Servet Böcek, who were treated in the hospital for suspected 'poisoning' after coming to Istanbul from Germany for vacation and later passed away, six defendants, five of whom are in custody, appeared before the judge. The court panel ruled for the release of the detained defendant, reception officer Muhammad Moeen Ud Din Chishti, while ordering the continuation of the detention of the other defendants and postponed the hearing to June 26.
Kadir Muhammet Böcek (6), Masal Böcek (3), mother Çiğdem Böcek, and father Servet Böcek, who came to Istanbul from Germany on November 9, 2025, and were treated in the hospital on suspicion of poisoning, later passed away. The trial regarding their deaths began at the Istanbul 30th Heavy Penal Court. In the hearing, six defendants, including the detained hotel official Hakan Oğlak and the owner of DSS Pest Control, suspect Serkan Kışı, will make their defense. In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was requested that the suspects Serkan Kışı, Zeki Kışı, Doğan Cağferoğlu, Hakan Oğlak, and Muhammad Moeen Ud In Chishti be separately sentenced to imprisonment from 2 years 8 months to 22.5 years for the crime of 'causing the death of multiple people with conscious negligence.' For Rustemsha Batyrov, a request for imprisonment from 2 years to 15 years for the crime of 'causing the death of multiple people with negligence' was made.
5 DETAINED 6 DEFENDANTS APPEARED BEFORE THE JUDGE
The hearing started around 11:00 with identity verification. While 4 defendants were present in the courtroom, the other defendants participated in the hearing via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS). On the other hand, the hearing was also attended by the complainants and defendants' lawyers, as well as many spectators.
"I DO NOT BELIEVE THE DEATHS ARE RELATED TO PEST CONTROL"
The detained hotel owner Hakan Oğlak stated, "Dear committee, I wish my life had been sacrificed so that not a single hair on their heads would be harmed, even if my hotel, my property burned down, this family could have lived. Many things have been said until now. I have worked in hospitality and as a waiter for many years. During the period when the incident occurred, I had a wound on my leg, so I started treatment and could not visit the hotel very often during this process. Halil Duran called me and said there was a pest complaint in room 101 and asked what we should do. I said, 'Call the pest control company.' As far as I know, the company came and sprayed a few days later, and we kept that room closed for 2 days. The reason we chose that company was due to its Google rating and the reference hotels on their site. It is impossible for the spraying done in room 101 to affect room 202 because there was no ventilation path between the two rooms. We had sprayed before, but no one was harmed. I do not believe their deaths are related to the spraying. I did not do the spraying myself. Even in the inspections conducted at the hotel, the agricultural and district teams could not understand whether the pest control company had a certificate; how could I know? I have been detained for a crime I did not commit for 5 months. I request my release due to my health problems," he said.
"I LOCKED THE HOTEL DOOR TOO"
The detained receptionist Muhammad Moeen Ud Din Chishti stated, "I came to work at the hotel in the morning. The door of room 101 was closed due to spraying. Servet Böcek and Çiğdem Böcek said their child vomited due to what they ate and asked us to clean the room, so we cleaned it. At midnight, there was a smell of vomit in the hotel. At 1:00 AM, I went to eat because I was hungry. I also locked the hotel door. When I left, I stuck the key to the window. After eating, I saw an ambulance in front of the door when I was going back to the hotel. I opened the door and helped the family. I am very sorry for this incident. I had no knowledge of the spraying," he said.
"I ONLY TELL MY EMPLOYEES TO BE CAREFUL"
The detained owner of the pest control company Zeki Kışı stated in his defense, "In 2019, we applied for a certificate for the company. Then the pandemic broke out, and we could not get it. I established this company together with Sinan. The pesticides have names. The masters know what the pesticides are good for. I do not buy the pesticides; I give the money to the masters I arrange, and they buy the pesticides. I have no knowledge about the pest control work. I am just the owner of the company. I have no knowledge about the operations. The only thing I know is that we received training for 2-3 months, that's it. We did not provide training to the employees. My company was registered as a cleaning company, not as a pest control company; I don't remember exactly. I only tell my employees to be careful. My pesticides do not kill people. I am very sorry; I feel guilty," he said.
WARNING FROM THE COURT PRESIDENT
Upon this, the Court President said, "Look, you have taken no precautions. You do not know; at least take someone who knows, but you are not doing that either. The people you are working with know nothing. The arrival of Wednesday is evident from Thursday," he said. The detained defendant Serkan Kışı, son of the pest control company owner, stated, "Before the pest control company, I worked at İGDAŞ, a subsidiary of İBB. I left the job because my child was newly born. After 5-6 months, I went to my father's side to help with the work. I have no authority in the company," he said.
"I WAS HIRED AS CLEANING STAFF"
The detained defendant Doğan Caferoğlu, who performed the pest control, stated in his defense, "I know Serkan and Zeki from our neighborhood. After my daughter was born, my wife and I were laid off, and we were in a difficult financial situation. Serkan sent me a message saying, 'If you are free, come to us; you can leave later if you find another job.' I waited for news from other companies for the first few weeks, and when I did not hear back, I had to accept. We had a short conversation. Serkan told me about the pest control job, 'We are a cleaning company, and you will be registered as cleaning staff.' He gave me the necessary training verbally, and at the beginning of August, I started going out alone. The company was entirely run through WhatsApp. There were 3 separate groups for appointments, accounts, and applications. Appointments came from the number I saved as Serkan. Then, unfortunately, this incident happened, and we went to the hotel on November 11. We did the application at the reception for 20 minutes. There was someone named Eyüp; I asked him, and he showed me room 101. We did two types of applications there; I diluted the pesticide with water and sprayed it, then poured plastic gel into a plate and left it in the room. After that, the process was finished, and I left the hotel," he said.
POSTPONED TO JUNE 26
All defendants' defenses were completed in the hearing. After a 45-minute break, the court announced its interim decision. In its interim decision, the court ruled for the release of the detained receptionist Muhammad Moeen Ud Din Chishti and the continuation of the detention of the other defendants. The hearing was postponed to June 26, Friday, at 10:30 for the resolution of missing issues.
