The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) imposed administrative fines at the upper limit on various television channels due to violations of broadcasting principles in TV programs, series, and illegal betting advertisements.
ADMINISTRATIVE FINE AT THE UPPER LIMIT FOR KANAL D
According to the written statement made by RTÜK, the Supreme Council convened with an intense monitoring agenda. The first report on the table was about the series 'Arka Sokaklar' broadcasted on Kanal D. It was found that the scenes in the series reflected the beliefs in society as if they were solely in the hands of one person or group, and that a religious group made threatening statements against the state's law enforcement agencies. It was concluded that the broadcasted scenes led to the abuse of religious values in society, and Kanal D was subjected to an administrative fine at the upper limit and a broadcasting suspension penalty.
PENALTIES WERE ALSO IMPOSED FOR ILLEGAL BETTING AND ADVERTISEMENTS
RTÜK also imposed sanctions on TV 8 for not complying with advertising duration rules during its weekly regular meeting. Subsequently, illegal betting advertisements and encouraging images, which are the source of many negative aspects in society, came to the agenda of RTÜK. Due to illegal betting advertisements during the Montenegro-Turkey match and the Lille-Fenerbahçe match, penalties were imposed on TV 8 and Acun Ilıcalı, the owner of EXXEN. Both TV8 and EXXEN were fined at the upper limit due to illegal betting advertisements during the national match and the Lille-Fenerbahçe Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round match.
The S SPORT + channel also received penalties for illegal betting advertisements. S SPORT + violated the principle stated in Law No. 6112, which says, "Broadcasting services cannot encourage the use of addictive substances such as alcohol, tobacco products, and drugs, or gambling," and thus was subjected to an administrative fine at the upper limit.
PENALTIES FOR 3 SERIES WITH PROGRAM SUSPENSION
Penalties were also imposed on series that contained violence and disrespected national and spiritual values. STAR TV's "Sahipsizler," NOW's "Yabani," and SHOW's "Deha" series faced sanctions at the upper limit due to violent scenes, especially those against women. Additionally, actions were taken against the series for violating national and spiritual values. A decision was made to suspend the programs.
“IT IS OUR DUTY TO STRICTLY ENFORCE BROADCASTING PRINCIPLES”
Regarding the issue, RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin stated on his social media account, "In our weekly regular meeting, we made severe sanction decisions across a wide range, including television channels that broadcast illegal betting advertisements. While we are not in favor of addressing problems with penalties, it is our duty to strictly enforce broadcasting principles. I thank responsible broadcasters," he expressed.
PRESIDENT ERDOĞAN HAD CRITICIZED
Speaking at the 7th Religious Council in Ankara, President Erdoğan said, "Series that should inform the public, on the contrary, play a bad role that promotes, legitimizes, and instrumentalizes violence. In terms of preventing this, we all have responsibilities, especially producers, screenwriters, media organizations, and RTÜK," he stated.
