Ahsen Meva Bebek, who was born in a private hospital in Ankara, fell ill three days later and passed away at another hospital when she was 17 days old. The family filed a complaint, alleging that their baby was dropped in the hospital, while the forensic report indicated that a fracture was found in the baby's skull. The grieving mother, who said, "I couldn't even smell my baby," is demanding that those responsible be punished.
On March 28, 2023, in Ankara, Hacer Ersoy Çetiner gave birth to her second child, Ahsen Meva, weighing 2,360 grams, at a private hospital during her 35th week of pregnancy. The newborn, Ahsen Meva, was admitted to intensive care with a diagnosis of 'transient tachypnea of the newborn' (a mild respiratory problem that begins shortly after birth and lasts for about 3 days).
WORSENED 3 DAYS LATER, DIED 17 DAYS LATER Three days later, as her condition worsened, baby Ahsen Meva was transferred to the branch of the same hospital in Sincan. After the intervention there, the baby was transferred to Ankara University Medical Faculty Cebeci Research and Application Hospital. A brain tomography taken there revealed a fracture in Ahsen Meva's skull, and bruises were detected on her face and head. Baby Ahsen passed away at the age of 17 days.
FRACTURE DETECTED IN THE SKULL Hacer Ersoy and Ahmet Çetiner filed a complaint, claiming that their baby was dropped at the private hospital. The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into the baby's death. The report from the Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institution stated that the baby died due to skull fractures caused by head trauma, along with widespread bleeding. The report also examined the patient monitoring reports from the private hospital. Accordingly, it was stated that the baby suffered head trauma, which should be accepted as having occurred between 00:00 and 07:00 on March 31, 2023, three days after birth.
LAWSUIT DEMANDING 6 YEARS IN PRISON Based on the report, a lawsuit was filed against the chief physician N. D., deputy chief physician S. D. Y., on-duty doctor A. A. K., pediatric cardiology doctor İ. U. S., intensive care nurse N. K., and obstetric nurse A. Y. for the crime of 'causing death by negligence,' seeking a prison sentence of 2 to 6 years. The trial of the 6 defendants is ongoing at the Ankara 75th Criminal Court of First Instance.
"SHE HAD NO REFLEXES, HER HEAD WAS SWOLLEN, HER EYE WAS RED" Mother Hacer Ersoy Çetiner stated that she gave birth to her baby with normal weight and reflexes, saying, "She was a healthy baby during the initial checks. They said she had a temporary breathing problem, so they took her to intensive care. Everything was normal for the first 2 days. On the morning of the 3rd day, when we entered to see our baby, she looked much better. However, that morning around 07:00, the hospital called and said our baby was deteriorating and they would transfer her to their branch in Sincan. When we arrived at the hospital, our baby had no reflexes, her head was swollen, and the area above her right eye was red. When I saw her like that, I asked what happened; but I couldn't get an answer. The doctor there said, 'We don't know, it will be investigated, she will be transferred, it can happen like this.' When I asked, 'How can it happen?' we didn't get a response. Then the doctor held my baby's hand and when he let go, she had no reflexes at all," she said.
"I COULDN'T SMELL MY BABY" Hacer Ersoy Çetiner expressed that they have been going through very difficult days for 2.5 years, saying, "We have lost a life, we have a child. As a mother, I couldn't hold her in my arms, I couldn't feed her, I couldn't smell her because I entered with a mask. They killed the brain of my baby, whom I left perfectly healthy. In other words, brain death has already occurred. We only caressed her body at Ankara Medical. I couldn't smell my baby's scent. I gave one of her clothes to a nurse at Ankara Medical, and she dressed her. When she took it off, she gave it back to me, thank you. I took the mouth wipes, and I smell them. We have been living this pain for 2.5 years; but those responsible are still in their positions. Our concern is that no other babies experience the same pain. Anyone who does not love their profession should not do this job. We trust in the justice of our state," she said.
"THEY SHOULD EXPLAIN THE FRACTURE IN OUR BABY'S HEAD" Father Ahmet Çetiner stated, "Our baby was transferred to Ankara University Hospital for further examination. The doctors there determined that the situation was a judicial case and reported it to the police. Later investigations revealed that the doctor on duty that night was not a permanent doctor of the hospital, but worked in the state and came on duty for a fee. She was the only patient, the only baby. Despite this, two fractures occurred in her head. This was confirmed by the Forensic Medicine report. The permission for the investigation was granted by the Ministry of Health, and the trial process has begun. In the first hearing, two people from the hospital management did not attend. We want an explanation of how and why the fracture in our baby's head occurred," he expressed.
"DOCTORS WITHOUT WORK PERMITS WORKED IN THE HOSPITAL" The family's lawyer Merve Uçak stated that they have filed complaints against all healthcare personnel who were in contact with the baby, especially on the night the trauma occurred, saying, "The necessary investigation permissions have been obtained from the Ministry of Health. In both the report of the professional responsibility board established within the Ministry of Health and the expert report obtained during the investigation phase, it has been determined that the doctors, nurses, and hospital management responsible for the baby's treatment were at fault. In addition to such a serious incident as trauma, we see that doctors without work permits were working in the hospital and intervening with the baby. It has also been determined that the on-duty doctor did not examine the baby even once during her duty period.
Currently, the trial process is ongoing. Although the public case was opened with the charge of 'causing death by negligence', we believe that as the trial progresses, these actions cannot be evaluated as negligent behavior. We will follow the process until the end to ensure that those responsible for the baby's death receive the punishment they deserve," he said.
