A former director of a care home for disabled individuals in South Korea has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting three female residents. Following an investigation initiated by a victim's complaint, a comprehensive assessment revealed that up to 20 female residents, including former ones at the facility, may have been subjected to sexual abuse. In the aftermath of the incident, 1,507 disability care facilities nationwide were placed under inspection.
A case of sexual abuse that emerged in a care facility for disabled individuals in South Korea has been brought to court. The facility's former director, Kim, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for actions against three residents.
INVESTIGATION BEGAN WITH A WOMAN'S COMPLAINT
The incident occurred at a disability care facility named Saekdongwon in the city of Incheon, west of Seoul. The police investigation began after a female resident with severe intellectual disabilities filed a complaint in February last year. During the investigation, it was determined that the facility's former director, Kim, had sexually abused three residents. As a result of the trial, the court sentenced the former director to 15 years in prison.
IT WAS DETERMINED THAT 20 WOMEN MAY HAVE BEEN ABUSED
Following the investigation, a more comprehensive study was conducted to determine the scale of the incident. In an assessment commissioned by Ganghwa County, women currently living at the facility and those who had previously stayed there were examined. The study revealed that a total of 20 female residents may have been subjected to sexual abuse.
1,507 DISABILITY CARE FACILITIES WERE PUT UNDER REVIEW
After the incident at Saekdongwon, the government expanded the review nationwide. A total of 1,507 disability care facilities across South Korea were scrutinized. As a result of the inspections, it was reported that 33 suspected abuse cases were identified in these facilities. Following the events, a decision was also made regarding the facility where the abuse occurred. According to a report on the BBC, the facility was shut down and its license was revoked.
