In Ankara, Eda O., who is 7 weeks pregnant, learned at a state hospital that her baby was alive after a private hospital diagnosed her with a 'blighted ovum' and recommended an abortion for 30,000 TL. Claiming that money was demanded for the abortion, Eda O. filed a criminal complaint against the doctors and hospital officials.
Eda O. (32), who is 7 weeks pregnant, claimed that a private hospital in Ankara reported that no embryo was visible in the gestational sac and that it might be an 'anembryonic pregnancy' (empty pregnancy), but she learned at a state hospital that her baby was alive. Eda O. filed a criminal complaint with the prosecutor's office against 2 doctors and hospital officials at the private hospital, where she alleged that 30,000 TL was demanded for an abortion.
SHE WAS PREGNANT WITH HER THIRD CHILD
Eda O., a homemaker pregnant with her 3rd child, applied to a private hospital for a routine check-up. In the report issued after the ultrasound examination at the hospital, it was stated that no embryo was visible in the gestational sac and that it might be an 'anembryonic pregnancy' (empty pregnancy). Eda O. learned that her baby was alive when she went to a state hospital just 1 hour later. While Eda O. was relieved by the report stating that the baby's heartbeat was present, she filed a criminal complaint regarding what she experienced at the private hospital. In her petition submitted to the prosecutor's office, Eda O. claimed that after the examination at the private hospital, Dr. O.S.C. said, 'You have no baby, there is no heartbeat, the pregnancy is dead. You are at vital risk. The baby must be removed urgently,' and that he demanded 30,000 TL for this operation. Eda O. requested that Dr. O.S.C., radiologist Dr. N.A., and hospital officials be punished for the crimes of 'attempted abortion' and 'attempted qualified fraud.'
'THEY ASKED FOR 30,000 TL FOR THE ABORTION'
Eda O. stated that when they went to the hospital for the check-up, they met with the specialist doctor, saying, 'The doctor said the baby's heartbeat had stopped, the baby had attached to the uterus, and the uterus needed to be cleaned and an abortion procedure performed immediately. Then they handed us the admission paperwork. But they said they could do it for 30,000 lira because we were a returning customer. Upon this, I said I did not want to have this procedure done there. When I said I wanted to go to a state hospital, they said, 'Okay, it's your choice.' I went to the state hospital, only about 40 minutes had passed. There, I gave my blood and was directed for an ultrasound. The ultrasound there revealed that the baby was consistent with 6 weeks and 1 day due to late fertilization, and that the heartbeat was also present.'
'THEY APOLOGIZED AND ADMITTED THEIR MISTAKE'
Eda O. stated that she then went back to the private hospital, saying, 'They only apologized to me. It was admitted that it was their mistake. And they said, 'What can we do for you?' I replied, 'There is nothing you can do for this. If I had had the baby aborted, you would not have been able to put it back. I do not accept any apology. I will use my legal rights to the fullest.' They tried to convince me. I made my complaints. I have also filed my complaints through the prosecutor's office. What was done to me today will continue to be done to others. And I am sure, perhaps there will be those who have fallen into this situation and, without considering going to a second hospital, have had an abortion directly based on the doctor's decision. When he saw me crying, the doctor said, 'Why are you crying? At least you can get pregnant. Many people who come here cannot get pregnant; think of them.' Even that statement is not nice. When I left, I was in a very bad state. I went to the other hospital crying. Of course, this is a process. It could be healthy or unhealthy. But finding out that a baby, said to have 'no heartbeat and attached to the uterus,' actually has a heartbeat is a very, very different feeling.'
Eda O. said she has filed a criminal complaint with the prosecutor's office, has also lodged complaints through the Presidential Communications Center, and will follow the process.
Hospital officials, on the other hand, denied the accusation. Hospital officials claimed that the mother-to-be was not given a report stating the baby was dead, and that follow-up was recommended because the embryo could not be visualized.
