The killing of Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin in northern Syria has caused a stir. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office revealed the truth about the two individuals, who were claimed to be journalists. TWO INDIVIDUALS KILLED IN SYRIA TURNED OUT TO BE PKK MEMBERSIt has emerged that the two individuals in question had arrest warrants for membership in the PKK terrorist organization. It was learned that there was an arrest warrant for Cihan Bilgin issued by the Mardin Criminal Court of Peace for the crime of "being a member of the PKK/KCK-PYD/YPG armed terrorist organization." As for Nazım Daştan, it was recorded that there were five different arrest warrants for the crime of "being a member of the PKK/KCK-YPG/YDG-H armed terrorist organization" and for making propaganda for the PKK/KCK terrorist organization, issued by the Gaziantep 2nd Heavy Penal Court. Additionally, he had six criminal records for the crimes of "establishing and managing a PKK/KCK armed terrorist organization" and "being a member of a terrorist organization." SCANDALOUS STATEMENT FROM THE ISTANBUL BAR ASSOCIATIONWhile the repercussions of the incident continue, a scandalous statement came from the Istanbul Bar Association. The Bar insisted that the individuals who were killed were journalists. In the statement made by the Bar, it was claimed that human rights were violated. BAR INSISTS ON THEIR STATUS AS JOURNALISTSThe statement from the Bar included the following expressions: "According to information reflected in the media, journalists Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin lost their lives as a result of an attack while following developments in Syria on December 19. Targeting journalists in conflict zones constitutes a violation of International Humanitarian Law and the Geneva Conventions. Moreover, targeting civilians who are not parties to the war is expressed as one of the war crimes in Article 8/2/b/ii of the Rome Statute. Therefore, the rules regarding the protection of journalists working in armed conflict areas are part of International Humanitarian Law. Furthermore, in relation to the aforementioned incident, citizens, including four of our colleagues who are members of the Bar, two law faculty students, and dozens of journalists, were detained during a press statement that was attempted to be made in Şişhane Square. Instead of immediately launching an investigation into this incident that violates international law and holding the responsible parties accountable, the detention of journalists and our colleagues who used their constitutional rights and mourned for their colleagues is an unacceptable situation. We demand an effective investigation into the killing of our two journalist citizens and the immediate release of those detained after making a press statement while exercising their constitutional rights, and we respectfully announce to the public that we will follow up on the process."
