A landmark ruling has been made regarding Erin Patterson, who caused the deaths of 3 people in Australia by serving her relatives a meat dish with poisonous mushrooms. The appellate court rejected the defendant’s objection and increased her sentence; by completely removing the possibility of parole after 33 years, it sentenced Patterson to life behind bars.

A new ruling has been issued in the case of Erin Patterson, who invited her relatives to her home for a meal and served a meat dish containing poisonous mushrooms in Australia. Patterson, who was convicted of killing three relatives, had her appeal against the conviction rejected, while the prosecution's request for a harsher sentence was accepted. Patterson, who previously had the possibility of applying for parole after 33 years, now has no path to release.

SHE SERVED A MEAT DISH CONTAINING POISONOUS MUSHROOMS

The incident occurred in July 2023 in the town of Leongatha in the Australian state of Victoria. Erin Patterson invited four relatives, including her former mother-in-law and father-in-law, to lunch at her home.

Patterson served her guests a meat dish called Beef Wellington containing the fatally poisonous death cap mushroom. Don Patterson, Gail Patterson and Heather Wilkinson, who ate the meal, died. Heather Wilkinson's husband, Ian Wilkinson, was severely poisoned but survived with treatment.

SHE HAD RECEIVED A LIFE SENTENCE FOR THREE MURDERS

In 2025, the jury convicted Patterson of three murders and one attempted murder. In September 2025, the court sentenced the defendant to three life terms and ruled that she could not apply for parole for 33 years.

Patterson appealed to have the convictions overturned, while the prosecution also appealed the decision on the grounds that the sentence imposed did not match the seriousness of the crimes.

COURT REMOVED THE POSSIBILITY OF RELEASE

With its ruling announced on October 30, the Victoria Court of Appeal rejected Patterson's appeal against the convictions. The court accepted the prosecution's request for a harsher sentence and removed the 33-year parole period.

Noting that the crimes were committed in a planned and calculated manner, the court sentenced Patterson to remain in prison for life without the possibility of parole. Thus, the possibility of the 52-year-old Patterson leaving prison was eliminated.

“EXTREMELY COLD-BLOODED AND CALCULATED”

Judge Stephen McLeish, a member of the appellate panel, described Patterson's actions as “extremely cold-blooded and calculated.” The court concluded that, due to the nature and manner of the crimes, setting a parole period was not appropriate.

Patterson, however, had argued that the poisoning was not intentional. With the appellate court's decision, both her convictions became final and the possibility of parole in her life sentence was removed.
