Social Democrats Gain Seats İn Danish Local Elections

Municipal and regional elections hand losses to premier's Liberals and right wing Danish People's Party.

Local elections in Denmark's provided gains for the Social Democrats as center-right Liberals and right-wing Danish People's Party lost ground, reports state broadcaster DR on Wednesday.



After nearly 3.2 million Danes cast their votes on Tuesday, the Social Democrats gained 2.9 percentage points overall compared to the municipal elections of 2013, claiming 842 seats out of 2,432 in play with 32.4 percent of the vote.



The Liberals, of which PM Lars Lokke Rasmussen is a member, received 3.5 percentage points less and the Danish People's Party lost 1.3 points, receiving 23.1 percent and 8.8 percent of the vote respectively. The Liberals claimed 767 municipal seats and the Danish People's Party 223.



The Social Democrats also won elections in four out of the country's five regions, reported the Copenhagen Post.



The turnout was 70.8 percent while there were nearly 4.5 million registered voters in the country. -
