The Chairman of the Capital Markets Board (CMB), İbrahim Ömer Gönül, stated, "We will soon lift the ban on short selling; it may not even last until 2025."

The Chairman of the Capital Markets Board (CMB), İbrahim Ömer Gönül, made evaluations regarding the short selling ban.

Gönül, at the Tourism Investment Forum meeting he attended, responded to Reuters' question about when the short selling ban would be lifted by saying, "We will lift the short selling ban soon. We are working on it, let's mature it, we also have studies related to the indices. After we finish those," while regarding the timing, he stated, "It may not extend to 2025."

IT WAS INTRODUCED AFTER THE FEBRUARY 6 EARTHQUAKE

The short selling ban was introduced at the beginning of 2023 following the February 6 earthquakes. Short selling is the process of selling a security that an investor does not own by borrowing it. This process is typically used by investors who anticipate that the price of an asset will decline.

With short selling, investors profit from the difference by buying back the shares at a lower price when the stock price drops and returning the borrowed shares.
