Sudan Security Forces Open Fire On Khartoum Protesters

15.05.2019 20:05

As yet unknown number of demonstrators injured, witnesses say.

Sudanese security forces on Wednesday opened fire on protesters near an ongoing sit-in outside army headquarters in Khartoum, leaving several people injured, according to witnesses.

"Security forces opened fire on protesters on Al-Jumhuriya Street near the sit-in, leaving several people wounded," one eyewitness told Anadolu Agency.

The Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors has called on qualified doctors to set up field hospitals in the area and help treat the injured.

Early last month, the Sudanese army ousted President Omar al-Bashir following months of popular demonstrations against his 30-year rule.

A military council is now overseeing a two-year "transitional period" during which it has pledged to hold presidential elections.

Demonstrators, however, have remained in the streets to demand that the ruling council relinquish power -- at the earliest possible date -- to a civilian authority. -
