Surprise move from the USA regarding Syria! Turkey has been completely removed from the list.

17.01.2025 08:11

U.S. President Joe Biden, who updated the 2019 Syria decree, completely removed Turkey's name from the text regarding the automatic sanctions imposed on new operations it would carry out against the PKK/YPG terrorist organization during the Peace Spring Operation. Additionally, accusations that Turkey's operations in Syria disrupt peace and stability were also removed from the text.

US President Joe Biden updated the Syria decree dated 2019. While expressions referring to Turkey's operations against terrorist organizations in Syria were removed, no new sanctions were added. On the other hand, general sanctions were expanded to include those who support blocked individuals and groups. No specific changes to sanctions against Turkey were made in this section.

TURKEY'S NAME REMOVED FROM THE TEXT

The US administration had previously implemented automatic sanctions regarding Turkey's new operations against the PKK/YPG terrorist organization during the Peace Spring Operation. Turkey's name has been completely removed from the text. Additionally, accusations regarding Turkey's operations in Syria, claiming that they disrupt peace and stability, endanger civilians, and undermine the fight against ISIS, were also removed from the text.

NEW SANCTIONS FROM THE US

Meanwhile, the US Treasury Department announced new sanctions against approximately 100 targets in Russia's finance, defense, and energy sectors. In a statement from the department, it was noted that action was taken regarding a sanctions evasion plan established between actors in Russia and China to facilitate payments for sensitive goods. In this context, 6 entities and 1 individual from Russia and 9 entities from China involved in the plan were added to the sanctions list.

SANCTIONS ON SUDAN'S SOVEREIGNTY COUNCIL CHAIRMAN BURHAN

The US administration added Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdulfattah al-Burhan to the sanctions list due to his role in the ongoing war in Sudan. US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo stated in a written statement regarding the sanctions imposed on Burhan that they are closely monitoring developments in Sudan, emphasizing that "today's step underscores our commitment to ending this conflict." Adeyemo noted that those responsible for the continued flow of arms to Sudan will be held accountable.

REACTION FROM SUDAN

The Sudanese government rejected and condemned the US Treasury Department's decision to impose sanctions on Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdulfattah al-Burhan. In a statement from the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was stated, "The Sudanese government rejects and condemns the US Treasury Department's sanctions against Sovereignty Council Chairman and Armed Forces Commander General Abdulfattah al-Burhan." The statement indicated that this decision lacks "the most fundamental principles of justice and objectivity," noting that it is based on "pretexts unrelated to reality." The statement added, "This decision is a great disrespect to the Sudanese people's complete support for Burhan as the leader of the Armed Forces, the representation of sovereignty, and the commander of the honorable struggle against the terrorist Janjaweed (Rapid Support Forces-RSF) gangs."
