Suspected PKK Terrorist Killed İn Clash İn Southeast Turkey

30.07.2015 11:03

Group open fire on police station in town on Syrian border.

A suspected PKK terrorist was killed in the early hours of Thursday morning in a clash with police near the Syrian border in southeast Turkey, police said.

A gunfight broke out when a police station in Cizre, Sirnak province, came under fire from a group of four suspected Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists in a van, a police source told Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Police returned fire, killing one gunman while the others escaped. The van and a quantity of ammunition and firearms were seized.

In the Bulak neighborhood of Hakkari, a city in Turkey's southeast, a masked crowd hurling homemade explosives and Molotov cocktails was dispersed with tear gas and water cannons early Thursday morning.

The clashes are the latest in a rising tide of violence - mostly in Turkey's Kurdish-majority southeast - that has seen security force members targeted following the July 20 Suruc bombing that killed 32 activists.

Across Turkey, more than 1,300 people suspected of links to the PKK, Daesh and a militant left-wing group have been arrested. - Ankara
