The Ministry of Health in Northern Cyprus has launched an investigation following the death of one baby in the neonatal intensive care unit at Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu Emergency Hospital and the intubation of six other babies. ALLEGATION OF ALCOHOL IN BABY FORMULAThe police have detained four healthcare workers. The families of the babies gathered in front of the hospital to protest against the hospital management and authorities. Reports in the media claimed that medical alcohol was mixed into the formula given to the babies. CRISIS DESK ESTABLISHEDNorthern Cyprus President Ersin Tatar stated in a written statement that he was deeply saddened by the incident and that he would follow up on the necessary investigation. According to the Northern Cyprus press, a crisis desk was established at the hospital with doctors and officials from different parts of the island. The Minister of Health of Northern Cyprus, Hakan Dinçyürek, stated that the incident would be investigated in all its dimensions and that those responsible would be punished if there was any negligence. FAMILIES REACTED STRONGLYSpeaking in front of the hospital, Dinçyürek emphasized that the situation regarding the babies would be explained to the families one by one and stated that all neonatal specialists on the island were at the hospital. While Dinçyürek was speaking in front of the hospital, some families reacted due to the late reporting of the news and the delayed announcements of developments. CONDITION OF 6 BABIES STABLEMinister Dinçyürek stated that the announcement was delayed due to the police investigation and judicial process. In a statement from the ministry regarding the health status of the six babies, it was noted that their condition was stable and their recovery was progressing positively. The cause of death of the 20-day-old baby will be determined after the autopsy.
