Head of the opposition Syrian National Coalition Ahmed al-Jarba will travel to the U.S. early next month for talks on reaching a political solution to the Syrian conflict, a coalition official said Saturday.
"The talks will tackle a number of files, including a political solution to the Syrian crisis," Fayez Sarah, a political and press adviser to al-Jarba, told Anadolu Agency.
He said that despite the failure of recent peace negotiations in Geneva, "the horizon for a political solution is still open".
Last week, al-Jarba visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and China.
He is also expected to visit Saudi Arabia by the end of April before he heads to Washington.
The Syrian opposition wants to topple al-Assad's dynastic regime, which has been ruling Syria for more than 40 years now.
Syria has remained in the throes of conflict since early 2011, when a peaceful uprising against al-Assad escalated into full-fledged civil war following a violent government crackdown.
According to the U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 150,000 people have been killed since the conflict began.
