The spokesperson announced that the clashes in the center of Sweida province have ended. CRITICAL STATEMENT FROM SHARA
Meanwhile, today, Syrian President Ahmed Shara emphasized the protection of minorities in his address to the nation in Sweida.
Shara called for unity against foreign interventions, urging the Arab Bedouin tribes to adhere to the ceasefire and remain loyal to the state. Additionally, Shara praised Turkey's resolute stance throughout the process.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The initial clashes in the city of Sweida began last Sunday when Druze in the region seized vehicles belonging to Bedouin Arabs. Both sides had mutually kidnapped and detained some civilians, leading to armed clashes. The Israeli army targeted Syrian government forces heading to Sweida on Monday and Tuesday in an attempt to end the armed clashes. Syrian Defense Minister Major General Murhaf Abu Kasra announced on Tuesday that a ceasefire had been declared in the city of Sweida, where Druze are in the majority.
However, on Wednesday, the ceasefire was broken, and clashes resumed between government forces and Druze groups. With the resumption of clashes, Israel conducted airstrikes on the area where the Presidential Palace is located in the capital Damascus, as well as on the General Staff and the city of Daraa, citing the security of the Druze people as a pretext. With Turkey's initiative, a ceasefire was established on Wednesday, and units affiliated with the Syrian army withdrew from Sweida.
However, clashes resumed on Thursday evening, and the Israeli army also carried out airstrikes on Sweida. The U.S. Ambassador to Ankara and Special Representative for Syria, Tom Barrack, announced late at night on social media that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara had agreed on a ceasefire supported by Turkey, Jordan, and neighboring countries. The Syrian Presidency also announced a comprehensive ceasefire today.
