Taliban Kill 30 Afghan Forces İn Restive Farah Province

Officials in Farah have been blaming Iran for fueling insurgency, a charge discarded by Tehran.

At least 30 Afghan security forces were killed in a coordinated attack by the Taliban in Farah province bordering Iran on late Wednesday, officials said on Thursday.



Shah Mohammad Naeemi, deputy head of the Farah Provincial Council, told Anadolu Agency the rebels attacked a joint station of army and police on the main Herat-Kandahar highway in the Bala Bulook district.



Naeemi confirmed that at least 30 security forces were killed in the late-night assault by the rebels.



There has been an evident surge in fighting in Farah for the past couple of months with the local officials blaming neighboring Iran for fueling insurgency, a charge discarded by Tehran.



Qari Yosuf Ahmad, a Taliban spokesman, claimed in a statement six infiltrators among the security forces helped the militants kill 30 security forces in Farah last night.



The local Tolo News reported Taliban fighters were seen on the streets of the provincial capital, Farah City, as well on Thursday night.



Las week, the militants claimed shooting down a military chopper in Anar Dara village of the province with 25 officer, including, deputy commander of the Afghan army's 207-Zafar Corps Gen. Nematullah Khalil, and chairman of the provincial assembly Farid Bakhtawar on-board.



The rebels still claim to possess the bodies of these 25 people, and have demanded the dead body of their fellow Taliban militant who got killed in cross-fire after killing Kandahar police and intelligence chiefs last month, for the exchange of bodies. -
