Police harshly intervened in private sector teachers who gathered again in Ankara to demand the right to a base salary and the resolution of assignment grievances. After a statement in front of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, teachers who wanted to march to the Ministry of National Education were beaten, dragged on the ground, and detained with handcuffs applied in a reversed position.

Private sector teachers, who recently ended their hunger strikes, took to the streets in Ankara again demanding a base salary right and the resolution of appointment grievances. After a statement made in front of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, police harshly intervened as teachers attempted to march to the Ministry of National Education.

ACTIONS PAUSED DURING NATO SUMMIT

Private sector teachers, who had been conducting a determined struggle in Ankara for two weeks to restore the base salary practice and resolve interview and appointment grievances, had temporarily paused their actions and the hunger strike they initiated due to security reasons related to the NATO Summit held in the capital. After the summit, the teachers gathered again to voice their demands, this time in front of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance.

POLICE BARRICADE AGAINST TEACHERS

The crowd, gathered upon the call of the Private Sector Teachers' Union, held a press conference in front of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance demanding their rights. Following the statement, the group, who wanted to march toward the Ministry of National Education (MEB) to make their voices heard, were not allowed by the police. A scuffle broke out as the teachers, cordoned off by the police, insisted on marching.

"WE WILL CONTINUE TO EXPAND THE STRUGGLE"

After the violent incidents, the Private Sector Teachers' Union issued a written statement strongly condemning the intervention. The statement included the following: "Teachers were beaten, forced to the ground, dragged. Not a single person left inside the barricade was spared; everyone was taken into custody. Many people, including mothers who came to show support, were subjected to physical violence. What happened today is not just an intervention against teachers; it is an effort to suppress the demand for secure employment, equality, and justice. The teachers' demands are legitimate. The struggle for rights cannot be silenced by violence and arrests. We will continue to expand our struggle until our friends in custody are released."
